Poppy completed the final health screenings required to begin her breeding career, and while her elbows passed beautifully and her left hip looked okay, her right hip did not meet the standard we hold for our program. Although repeating her imaging in six months could potentially yield a passing or different result, it still would not represent the level of structural soundness we are committed to producing or being responsible for. It is important to share that this outcome is not a reflection of Poppy’s breeder, her upbringing, or her lineage — she comes from exceptional, carefully selected lines. Sometimes, despite the very best breeding practices, these things simply happen. As ethical breeders, we believe that only the healthiest, highest‑quality dogs should contribute to the future of the Labrador breed, and Poppy’s results made it clear that the right choice — for both the breed and for her — is to retire her from breeding before she ever begins. While this decision has been heartbreaking, it is made with love, integrity, and deep respect for the generations of Labradors yet to come. Poppy will be spayed and will spend her life with us as our cherished “Auntie Poppy,” bringing joy, silliness, and sweetness to our home every day.
